Ground was broken in 1978, and the building was dedicated in 1981. Barnes served as the campus planner in the late 1970s and the 1980s, and he was either the design architect or a consulting architect for the Education/Social Work Building, the Natitorium/Physical Education Building, the Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) Buildings II and III, and the University Library.
