Sign reads: Local Red Cross Chapter - Almost a Century of ServiceLawrence County received its charter from the American Red Cross in 1917. Early work was primarily in support of World War I although local families were also assisted. In the first two years 420 local families were helped and 33,270 packages were shipped overseas to help refugees in war-torn countries. In 1920 the Red Cross procured the first public health nurse for the county. The Red Cross handled the distribution of some government food supplies during the Great Depression. During the historic 1937 floods, the local Chapter took in refugees from Louisville. They came in on freight cars - 800 people to Bedford, and 750 to Mitchell who had to be fed and cared for. Many stayed for 2 weeks or more. In WW II, the Red Cross began collecting blood for service men and Red Cross women helped with the War Relief efforts. In 1989 the building on 29th street was purchased. In 1998, the Orange County and Lawrence County Chapters merged to form the Hoosier Hills Chapter. Martin County was added in 2001.
