The first race ever held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was a five-mile event on August 19, 1909, for cars with a piston displacement of not more than 230 cubic inches. Louis Schwitzer of Indianapolis is shown here as he drove a four-cylinder Stoddard-Dayton to victory in 5 minutes and 13.4 seconds, an average speed of 57.43 miles an hour. Three other short races and a 250-mile feature event, won by Bob Burman in a Buick with an average speed of 53.7 MPH, completed the first days program. |
