On slide mount: O.D. Bohlen house, 1440 BroadwayProb. O.D. Bohlen, newel post on main stairway Yes Oscar D. Bohlen House1440 BroadwayArchitect: Oscar D. Bohlen1885The House is a good example of Queen Anne architecture. The porch has classical columns, a balustrade, and the gabled roof has a gabled dormer with a Palladian window. Oscar D. Bohlen, a noted local architect, built this as his residence. It is likely that he designed the home.Like his father, Bohlen (1863-1936) was an architect. The elder Bohlen founded the prominent firm D. A. Bohlen & Son. The name of the company remained unchanged even after his death. The Young Bohlen graduated from the Boston Institute of Technology in 1882. He then returned home and worked for his fathers business. The D. A. Bohlen & Son firm was responsible for many well-known downtown buildings, including the old Indiana National Bank, the Majestic Building and the Murat Temple. Bohlen maintained residence in the house until his death in 1936.Old Northside Historic Area Preservation Plan, 1979 single-family dwelling |
