407 - 409 N. Park Avenue, Hermann Lieber Cottage, Lockerbie Square, Indianapolis, c.1978 Yes Hermann Lieber Cottage
407-409 North Park Avenue
c.1860
This cottage has several interesting features which distinguish it from its neighbors. The eaves have a wide overhang with carved rafter ends, and the gable overhang is supported with elaborately sawn brackets. The second-floor double window has aninterestingly shaped head with a label moulding. On either side of the windows there arehexagonal vents with heavy molded caps. first floor of the main facade has a doorand two windows. The The form and detailing of this cottage suggest a Swiss chalet, aninspiration to mid-nineteenth century American architects and designers. The house wasbuilt by German-immigrant and civic leader Hermann Lieber, founder of H. Lieber andCompany, photographic supply company, co-founder of the German-English IndependentSchool, and Das Deutsche Haus. In 1868, Capain William Tarkington, brother of Booth Tarkingtons grandfather, bought the house. Tarkington was secretary to Governor Oliver Morton. Restoration of the cottages exterior in 1977 resulted in the removal of the porch and asphalt siding. Before restoration the cottage had a four-bay facade reflecting the cottages earlier conversion to a double residence.
Lockerbie Square Historic Area Preservation Plan, 1987 single-family dwelling |
