Carey-McKee-Elder House1229 North Delaware Street1873The brackets and window surrounds still remain and mark the style of this Italianate cottage. Jason S. Carey, a stave and box maker, built this home as a speculative venture. In 1893 it was occupied by Edward L. and William J. McKee.William McKee was Brigadier General commanding the Indiana National Guard at the time he took up residence here. During the Spanish-American War he became Brigadier General of U.S. Army volunteers. He retired in 1914 and lived here until 1921. His brother, James Robert McKee, married Benjamin Harrisons daughter, Mary Scott Harrison.Bowman Elder was the next resident of the home. A leading Indianapolis businessman, Elder was involved in real estate and managed several of the more prominent downtown buildings, including the Chamber of Commerce and Fletcher American Building. Elder is also credited with being instrumental in establishing the national headquarters of the American Legion in Indianapolis.Old Northside Historic Area Preservation Plan, 1979
