Quay Workers Cleaning Fish, 1976

Description: Typed on back of photo: Work is seasonal. Payment is generally hourly, so summer wages are high, but winter take-home pay can be as low as £10 per week. There is no security of employment, no unions. Hourly payment is ideal for the gaffer, especially the small local processer, and even the labourers regard the flat rate or set hours as a restriction of freedom. Photograph by Ken Grint. Written on back of photo: N. Tyneside CDP IIU set 1976.
