First edition, No. 96 of 300 copies signed by Nardelli, who conceived the project, and the artist Matthew Hillier. The foreward was written by John Aspinall. The work is divided into five chapters (the Sumatran Rhino, the Javan Rhino, the Indian Rhino and the Black and White Rhinos) and contains categorical information, including the life and history, about the five surviving species. Hillier spent two years on the illustrations, traveling to Africa and Sumatra to study rhinos and producing these large plates of portraits and paintings. The plates were printed by Adrian Lack at the Senecio Press, using a new waterless printing technique developed in Japan by Toray Nardelli (b. 1953) is an Italian naturalist who has dedicated his life to the protection and conservation of endangered species. The book is sewn flexibly on raised cords, and is covered in goatskin, dyed and sanded to emphasize the unusually heavy grain.
