Al-Sayyab, Badr Shakir (author)Khouri, Mounah A. (translator)Algar, Hamid (translator)Cowder, Deborah (printer) Letterpress. Edition of 40. This broadside was printed using a combination of old and new technologies. The body of the poem was handset using metal type; the titling and colophon are photopolymer plates, which allows letterspacing that would be impossible to achieve with traditional means. Together, these elements were printed using a Vandercook SP-15 proof press. The background image was printed using a Canon PIXMA Pro9000 large-format inkjet printer. The “blood” is artists’ gouache that was dripped from a brush. This collection supports and promotes awareness to the important mission and framework of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalitions focus on the lasting power of the written word and the arts in support of the free expression of ideas, the preservation of shared cultural spaces, and the importance of responding to attacks, both overt and subtle, on artists, writers, and academics working under oppressive regimes or in zones of conflict, despite the destruction of that literary/cultural content. This is a project that touched my heart. When I heard that volunteers were being asked to print broadsides to raise money for humanitarian aid in Iraq, there was no question in my mind that here was a chance to do something that could make a real difference for real people. Having seen many of the other broadsides submitted for this project, I am delighted to have my work appear among such creative and distinguished company. |
