Al-Marashi, Huda (author)Bryan, Tara (printer) Letterpress. This collection supports and promotes awareness to the important mission and framework of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalitions focus on the lasting power of the written word and the arts in support of the free expression of ideas, the preservation of shared cultural spaces, and the importance of responding to attacks, both overt and subtle, on artists, writers, and academics working under oppressive regimes or in zones of conflict, despite the destruction of that literary/cultural content. I actually asked Lisa Rappoport from The Al-Mutanabbi Street Coalition to choose a poem for me because I responded so emotionally to all of them I couldn’t pick a “favorite.” I was VERY happy with her choice, and I started thinking literally about seeing things on television which are removed from the actual events (the box and its relationship to the still image on a sheet of paper), which led to images of disembodied limbs, to Mexican milagros, which are small cast-metal body parts used at shrines to invoke blessings. Eventually, I moved away from the literal representation and came to some plates I had made from rubbings of stone. To me, the texture is reminiscent of the graininess of a television screen, of video, of the crudeness of physical conflict as a means of resolving disagreements, and the eternal urge to bomb the enemy back to the stone age. I wanted the text to be the focus, and settled on a touch of red for the title to set it off. |
