Wolpe, Sholeh (author)Main, Jaime (printer) Letterpress with photocopied collage. Edition of 17.This collection supports and promotes awareness to the important mission and framework of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalitions focus on the lasting power of the written word and the arts in support of the free expression of ideas, the preservation of shared cultural spaces, and the importance of responding to attacks, both overt and subtle, on artists, writers, and academics working under oppressive regimes or in zones of conflict, despite the destruction of that literary/cultural content. I found myself thinking about a violent octopus coming off the page throwing his ink at me. In an odd way it reminded me of Ozzfest and all of the insanity thats surrounded it, so when I finally started thinking more on the Al-Mutanabbi Street Broadside Project I thought about how I show a piece that I would have made for a rock concert. I love the thought of a bold print and an even bolder image fighting for your vision and confusing your senses so that the text doesnt show at first as text but as a background. The octopus is looking at you. He is dripping with ink as he is bursting out from the text. The poem is repeated so it can be ingrained into your thoughts! |
