Looking For War

Description: Meyebroker, Ann (author)Heller, Tracy (printer)Regis, Dave (printer)
Letterpress. Edition of 35.This collection supports and promotes awareness to the important mission and framework of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalitions focus on the lasting power of the written word and the arts in support of the free expression of ideas, the preservation of shared cultural spaces, and the importance of responding to attacks, both overt and subtle, on artists, writers, and academics working under oppressive regimes or in zones of conflict, despite the destruction of that literary/cultural content.
Upon reading Looking for War by Anne Menebroker, the language about birds scattering from a tree stood out as a possible visual. Associating the sudden movement of birds scattering with emotions of surprise and unrest. But, ultimately we decided to go with gliding birds to give a feeling of tranquility rather than chaos. Birds symbolize the ability to soar above pettiness, as they float on invisible qualities such as peace and freedom. We chose this poem because it is timeless and speaks to the futile nature of all wars, not just the war in Iraq. In the way that birds are a metaphor for peace, the poem is representative of the pointless nature of war. Two-and-a-half years ago we bought our press, and have been teaching ourselves to use it ever since. We both love it for different reasons. As an engineer Dave is fascinated with the workings of an early 20th-century machine, and as a print designer Tracy has a deep appreciation for the work the press produces. We both share a love for typography and the printed word. Our different skills and talents perfectly complement each other, making us an ideal team.
