Peace, in the Name of Allah

Description: 3-run lithograph made on aluminum plates and printed on white Arches 88 paper. Edition of 10.
This project appealed to me as I have travelled widely in Islamic countries and have had many warm contacts with Muslims. Although I never visited Iraq, I have spent time in Syria. The present situation is so painful in Syria and Iraq, that this print project is a welcome opportunity to make a positive contribution, however minute. My print is called, ‘Peace, in the name of Allah,’ which is effectively a prayer for peace in the Middle East. It is also a prayer for peace amongst all people. The female hands are in the Muslim prayer position. The style of the heart surrounded by barbed-wire reference the raw and direct emotionality of Cuban and Mexican prints, which seemed appropriate to me in this context. The background text is a page from a treatise on mathematics, written by Apollonius, the ancient Greek mathematician, translated into Arabic in medieval times. It signifies the precious transmission of ideas and knowledge through the written word. It is burnt round the edges, but has survived. The print is a 3-run lithograph made on aluminium plates, and printed on white Arches 88 paper in an edition of 10. I made it during my time at the Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque this summer. It felt somehow poignant making it in the USA, given that countrys recent extensive involvement in Iraqi affairs - shared, of course, by the UK. I am indebted to my husband, David Wade, from whom I learnt my love of Islamic culture. My travels in Muslim lands were made with him while he photographed the wonderful decorative architecture of the Islamic tradition (Retrieved from IUCAT November 8, 2019).
