al-Rahim, Abd (author)al-Rahim, Salih (author)Skratz, G.P. (translator)Chabot, Michael (printer) Letterpress. Edition of 25. This collection supports and promotes awareness to the important mission and framework of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalitions focus on the lasting power of the written word and the arts in support of the free expression of ideas, the preservation of shared cultural spaces, and the importance of responding to attacks, both overt and subtle, on artists, writers, and academics working under oppressive regimes or in zones of conflict, despite the destruction of that literary/cultural content. Abd al-Rahim Salih al-Rahim’s poem seems to mourn this tragic event with meaningful sentiment. To me, his choice to depict the hide-bound donkey appears to connect with the book-market because of the word, “bound.” The reason being that books are held together by their bindings. This connection impels me to view the donkey and the book market as one and the same. Like the donkey, those on al-Mutanabbi Street toil and sweat sorrow because of the hardship they have endured. There is hope however. Like the donkey, the imaginations of the Iraqi people and their authors rise into the heavens. Their spirit is immortal, knocked down, but never destroyed. With these works of art, I express my deepest sorrow and condolences for all those affected by the attack on the Al Mutanabbi Street book market. |
