Monotype (ghost). Edition of 5. My work shows my near obsession with patterns, though I am equally obsessed by chance. I want to have a certain amount of randomness in my work and have several set of dice I use to guide me on an undirected course. After a number of years of working with geometric patterns I ran across this quote: Note to Self: Step Out of Line. It was about seeing the world differently, thinking about things from a new perspective. This inspired me to figuratively step out of line, away from the purely geometric form and structure used in much of my earlier work, using organic, curvilinear lines and shapes. Based on botanicals these pieces come in to being from a base of those same geometric forms.I have only a general idea of what I’ll paint before I get started. Any sketching I do ends up being a part of the finished project. Sometimes I’ll draw and redraw the same image numerous times, even with purely geometric designs there are several iterations. My work depends on the repeated application and removal of paint. The residue and traces remaining from earlier applications are an integral part of each work. All of my works are based on looking at shapes with intent, not of copying them but understanding and reinterpreting them.
