Hattie Brown (steamboat)

Description:	The Hattie Brown was built in 1884 and made a regular run from Warsaw to Madison, Indiana and back daily. She was converted to an oil engine in 1915; two years later she was lost in the terrible freeze of 1917-1918 when the Ohio River froze for more than seven weeks. The Hattie Brown was one of those boats that endeared herself to the people who knew her. During the terrible weeks of the above mentioned freeze the Hattie Brown sought protection up the Licking River but was caught in the icy grip of the river. When the ice gorge broke, she was swept away and was tossed on the rocks below Markland, Indiana. When the river receded, and for years thereafter, the remains of the Hattie Brown could be seen. It was a sad resting place for an old friend. She was replaced by the Vim which was at Madison when the river froze. The Vim survived but never gained the hearts of the people as the Hattie Brown had done.
