Louis A. Ernst (1846-1928)

Description: Louis A. Ernst, Sr. was born at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania on November 14, 1846. In 1850 his family moved to Madison where he resided until his death on April 19, 1928. Mr. Ernst worked at several local establishments early in life including Robbins Furniture Factory and Clements Starch Factory. He also worked as an engineer on some of the steamboats. In 1880 he opened a grocery store at 630 West Main Street, later moving the business to 411 West Main Street. In 1928 his son, Fritz, purchased and donated several acres of land in Lancaster Township for the purpose of establishing a Boy Scouts of America camp as a memorial to his late father and it was named Camp Louis Ernst.
