Born in Sullivan, Indiana in 1879, Hays served as chairman of the Republican National Committee (February 1918-June 1921); manager of Warren G. Hardings presidential campaign (1920); U.S. postmaster general (March 1921-March 1922); and president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) (1922-1945). Primarily correspondence and documents relating to politics, the motion picture industry, and general business. Included is a document regarding the plan for self-regulation of the film industry to the Department of Justice, discussion of the Black Hawk Coal Company and mining, and Hays remarks on This Year of Promise Program.
