Born in Sullivan, Indiana in 1879, Hays served as chairman of the Republican National Committee (February 1918-June 1921); manager of Warren G. Hardings presidential campaign (1920); U.S. postmaster general (March 1921-March 1922); and president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) (1922-1945). In addition to materials related to Hays personal and professional interests, this folder contains statements calling for the repeal of the 18th Amendment, copies of statements or speeches about the political situation and the 1932 election, letters from friends about the speech Hays delivered before the Indiana State Bar Associations annual dinner, a copy of Hays remarks at the opening of the RKO-Roxy Theatre, Christmas and New Year messages, and correspondence about the Indiana Lincoln Union.
