Born in Sullivan, Indiana in 1879, Hays served as chairman of the Republican National Committee (February 1918-June 1921); manager of Warren G. Hardings presidential campaign (1920); U.S. postmaster general (March 1921-March 1922); and president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) (1922-1945). In addition to materials related to Hays personal and professional interests, this folder contains correspondence about the coal industry, football tickets, Indiana Governor Harry Leslies visit to Hinkle Hays home in Sullivan, a rumor that Hays was going to be replaced by New York Mayor James Walker, and opinions on selling motion pictures for home talkies.
