Born in Sullivan, Indiana in 1879, Hays served as chairman of the Republican National Committee (February 1918-June 1921); manager of Warren G. Hardings presidential campaign (1920); U.S. postmaster general (March 1921-March 1922); and president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) (1922-1945). In addition to materials related to Hays personal and professional interests, this folder contains job requests and recommendations, legislative reports, correspondence with Joseph Breen related to the Motion Picture Code and publicity, and a letter discussing the demographics of a typical theater audience and the need to attract a new group of people. It also includes correspondence about the postal service and a motion picture convention in Italy.
