Correspondence, speeches, and other documents sent to and from Will H. Hays during the 1920s. Born in Sullivan, Indiana in 1879, Hays served as chairman of the Republican National Committee (February 1918-June 1921); manager of Warren G. Hardings presidential campaign (1920); U.S. postmaster general (March 1921-March 1922); and president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) (1922-1945). In addition to materials related to Hays personal and professional interests, this folder contains daily reports for Hays, job requests and recommendations, a letter written by a theater exhibitor discussing his difficulties with film producers and the Hays organization, and a copy of a resolution about changes in the industry brought about by sound motion pictures and the creation of a committee to investigate the industry so that conditions can be improved. It also includes a long letter from Hays to President Hoover about current industry affairs including a lawsuit involving West Coast Theatres, arbitration, trade practices, mergers, and an old Federal Trade Commission investigation, a letter about creating a committee to investigate problems in the industry, and a list of factors that have contributed to changes in the economic conditions in the motion picture industry. |
