Born in Sullivan, Indiana in 1879, Hays served as chairman of the Republican National Committee (February 1918-June 1921); manager of Warren G. Hardings presidential campaign (1920); U.S. postmaster general (March 1921-March 1922); and president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) (1922-1945). In additition to materials related to Hays personal and professional interests, this folder contains a number of letters that reference Hays absence from his office and his action in Florida. It also includes correspondence about the postal service, political issues, life insurance policy inquiries, and Hays decision to join the MPPDA.
