Description: |
Correspondence, speeches, and other documents sent to and from Will H. Hays during the 1920s. Born in Sullivan, Indiana in 1879, Hays served as chairman of the Republican National Committee (February 1918-June 1921); manager of Warren G. Hardings presidential campaign (1920); U.S. postmaster general (March 1921-March 1922); and president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) (1922-1945). In addition to materials related to Hays personal and professional interests, this folder contains correspondence about the public relations department of the Saenger Amusement Company, the Actors’ Equity Association, the Motion Picture Club of New York, and the efforts of two men who are attacking the Hays organization. It also includes a copy of the constitution of the American Council of the Institute of Pacific Relations, letters to studio executives about a recent article, and reviews of the film Is Your Daughter Safe?, a cautionary tale of modern day romance. This folder also contains a letter attacking the MPPDA and its alleged habit of blacklisting and boycotting certain members of the industry, a report about labor unions, and a memo discussing insider information about people connected to the film industry. |
