Description: Photo of Main Street in Elkhart, looking north from Lexington. East side of street. Note on reverse side of photo says:Photo taken in the summer of 1884. The Water and Gas Works Construction Co. laying water pipe in Main Street, Elkhart, Indiana. The W.G.W.C. Co. was under contract with Fairbanks Morse Co. of Chicago to build the complete water works plant for bonds, $100,000.00. Fairbanks Morse & Co was under contract with the Elkhart Water Co. to build the water works plant for an issue of stocks and bonds. The Elkhart Water Co. had a contract with the City of Elkhart to supply fire protection through fire hydrants.Written from memory by George R. Harlow, resident engineer in 1884 for the Water & Gas Works Construction Co. while the Water Works plant was built. /s/ George R. Harlow C.E.
