Description: |
Head and shoulder posed photograph of Isaac Shreiner in Civil War uniform with the notation, By Maury, Conn's Old Gallery, Elkhart Indiana, on the back of the photograph. There is also a 3-cent Internal Revenue Stamp hand cancelled, Sept.11. The presence of an Internal Revenue Stamp suggests that the photograph was made between 1864-1866 when the government taxed photographs. (per information in the vertical file on photographers) Conn's Old Gallery is a reference to the business of Charles J Conn (father of C G Conn) who was listed as a 'daugerean' in the 1861-1862 Elkhart City Directory. His business seems to have been known sometimes as Conn's Old Gallery or Conn's Old Stand. It is tempting to associate Maury with E L Mowry, a well-known Goshen photographer, who also perhaps worked in Elkhart, according to Joan Hostetler, who put together a list of Elkhart County Photographers for her presentation before the ECHS Annual Meeting in November of 1998.
