Mother Theodore writes that the Protestant ministers are working to destroy the Catholic schools through the passage of a general education tax to support public schools for all children regardless of gender or wealth. Many Catholic schools have closed, but the Sisters of Providences schools continue with more than two hundred students at North Madison and Fort Wayne combined. The boarding schools are wlll attended. She mentions the establishment of Saint Meinrad Archabbey in southern Indiana and how it will aid in the management of the German population. She encloses a lithograph of the new Motherhouse and describes its furnishings. Dated January 6, 1853. |
