Description: |
Lafayette and Indianapolis Railroad passenger train in Zionsville, mid-1870s. Accompanying caption: The Lafayette & Indianapolis railroad was built through Boone County with the building of the grade in 1850, allowed to settle for a year, with the ties and rails put down in 1852. Service was begun in that year. Line was built from Lafayette toward Indianapolis. first train reached Thorntown on June 4, 1852, and Leganon on August 12, 1852. the name was later changed to Indianapolis & Lafayette, then it became the Big Four of the New York Central System, and in recent years became the property of Penn Central, and now (1974) is operated by AmTrack. The faded original picture was copied by Zionsville photographer Wm. lloyd Riley, and recopied for me from Rileys print by John McCoy Miller, Lebanon photographer. Miller was able to bring out the details much better. The picture was published in the Zionsville Main Street Almanac.the train is believed to have been aproaching (headed south) the crossing at what is now First and Cedar streets. the locomotive is of the style built in the early 1870s, and the picture may be been take in or around 1875. --Ralph W.
