French General Store

Description: Caption: James M. French built this store at Center (Little Chicago) in central Marion township, a short distance south of the crossroads (County Roads 500N, 900E). At left is blacksmith shop which French also built for his son-in-law, Oscar Perigo. Pictured faintly in front of smithy are Perigo and Frenchs son, Floyd, then 13 years old when picture was taken in 1900. In front of store, L. to R.-Mrs. Albert Murray, Mrs. James French, and store owner James French. French later sold store and moved to Lebanon to run a shoe store on south side of square. Later was in the coal business. he bought the Home Shoe Store, 105 W. Main St., in Lebanon, in 1916, of Carre Davis. Picture loaned by Floyd French, living in Lebanon.
