Hyacinthe Lasselle writ of error in Polly v. Lasselle, 1820 July 27

Description: Legal document (writ of error) stating Hyacinthe Lasselles prosecution of error in the cases of Lasselle v. State and Polly v. Lasselle from the Indiana Supreme Court to the U.S. Supreme Court on July 27, 1820. The Knox County court in the case of Polly (a woman of color) v. Lasselle, had ruled Polly Strong would remain enslaved to Hyacinthe Lasselle, but the case moved to the Indiana Supreme Court, which overturned the county court decision, officially ending any legal form of slavery in the state in Lasselle v. State. Ultimately, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the case and the states decision was upheld.
