Hewitt of Company G, 3rd Indiana Cavalry to Mrs. Caroline Heineken on January 31, 1863 with news that her husband, Samuel Heineken, was likely captured by Confederate forces at the Battle of Stones River (Murfreesburo) almost a month earlier. Heineken was a prisoner at Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia.
