Although slavery was prohibited in Indiana, African Americans were still not given their civil rights. After 1831, black settlers in Indiana were required to register with their county and post a $500 to guarantee good behavior. Nelson and Gilly Ann Perry registered in Gibson County, Indiana. Their registration required a witness, the applicants physical description, and place of birth. |
