311. Clark Countys first automobile

Description: The image of the first automobile in Clark County was taken on the grounds of the Howard home, now the Howard Steamboat Museum, on Market Street in Jeffersonville. The car, centered in the picture, was a Haynes-Apperson automobile. The car appears to replicate the appearance of a buggy, having a roof with a fringe on the top, a rectangular body with cut-outs allowing easier entrance for seating. In the background to the left are two steps, a tall structure that could either be an outdoor lamp or a piece of decorative sculpture. To the right of the car is a cannon on wheels.
