634. Delta Queen vs Belle of Louisville Race, 1962

Description: Pictured is the first race between the Delta Queen (Steamboat) of Cincinnati (Hamilton County, Ohio) and the Belle of Louisville (Steamboat) of Louisville (Jefferson County, Kentucky). The Belle had recently been purchased and renamed the Belle of Louisville. Its original name was the Idlewild and then the Avalon. From 1931 to 1937 she operated as a ferry for Rose Island Excursions. In the foreground several cars and one truck can be seen parked on the 2nd street wharf area and surrounded by people watching the race. In the distance is the Indiana shoreline. The Clark Memorial Bridge can be seen at the far right hand side.
