John F. Kennedy and Birch Bayh

Description: Democratic Senator Birch Evans Bayh of Indiana meeting with President John F. Kennedy in the Oval Office of the White House. At age 26, Bayh began his political career in the Indiana House of Representatives in 1954. He was the youngest Speaker of the House in Indiana history, before being elected to Congress. As the chairman of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments, Bayh was the principal author of two constitutional amendments, the 25th and 26th. He also drafted a new version of the Equal Rights Amendment, which ultimately failed during the ratification process. Bayh was also know as the Father of Title IX, which gives women equal opportunities in public education.
