Description: |
Photographs from President Theodore Roosevelts visit to Indiana on May 30, 1907, where he gave a speech to a large crowd at the afternoon dedication of the statue of Major General Henry W. Lawton outside of the old Marion County Courthouse. The statue was later moved and rededicated in Garfield Park. Other photographs also depict the morning procession through Monument Circle in the city to the home of Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks, where the president met with numerous local luminaries and politicians. There are also three clippings printed decades later, depicting Roosevelts 1907 and 1918 visits to Indianapolis. The caption of the June 6, 1971 clipping incorrectly identifies these 1907 scenes as occurring during the 1918 visit, despite the presence of Charles W. Fairbanks, who was deceased when Roosevelt visited in 1918. |
