Description: |
Originally called the Bobbs-Merrill Company, the Bowen-Merrill Company first opened as a bookstore in 1850 and eventually published its first book in 1866. In 1885, the firm merged with Bowen, Stewart and Co., creating Bowen-Merrill Company, creating a company that combined a bookstore, book publishing and a wholesale business. The company published a variety of famous Indiana authors including James Whitcomb Riley. The image shows a series of store fronts in the background, with Bowen Merrill Company being the predominant one. There are several tram cars in the fore ground and a number of people walking along the sidewalk in front of the store fronts.
