Description: |
The Indianapolis Bell Company was formed in 1920 after the consolidation of a number of different telephone companies working throughout the Indianapolis area. At that time, the company employed nearly 5,000 people and served approximately 170,000 telephones throughout the state of Indiana. The original building was built in 1907 but, using rollers and other equipment, the seven story structure was moved approximately 100 feet west and 52 feet south in 1930 to make room for a new structure at the original location. The new structure originally only had seven stories but several additions were added throughout the decades, increasing the overall height of the structure. This image shows the corner of a tall structure approximately 18 stories tall. There is a woman walking past the photographer in the fore ground with a street intersection right behind her that has several cars both parked and driving by.Source: Bodenhamer and Barrows “The Encyclopedia of Indianapolis” 1994. |
