L.S. Ayres and Company building

Description: L.S. Ayres and Company was an Indiana department store founded by Lyman S. Ayres in 1872 and dissolved in 2006. Its flagship store in downtown Indianapolis, located at 1 West Washington Street, opened in 1905. L.S. Ayres carried a full line of merchandise including home goods, kitchen wares, and toys but it was most known for its womens fashions, Tea Room, and seasonal displays. As L.S. Ayres grew over the years, existing structures were expanded and additional buildings were constructed along West Washington and Meridian Streets. This photograph shows storefront of L.S. Ayres flagship store at the corner of West Washington and Meridian streets.
