| Description: |
Birth returns filed by doctors and midwives with the Marion County Health Department. Once the Health Department received the return, a birth certificate would be issued. Indiana began keeping birth records in 1882, but they were optional until 1907, so not every family chose to register their childs birth. The returns are sorted alphabetically by surname, although the occasional record may be out of order due to poor handwriting and spelling. Birth certificates for the children listed in these records may be obtained from the Marion County Health Department. |
