Description: |
Advertisement from the Club Greyhound, Clarksville, Ind., announcing the farewell of the George Hamilton band and the coming attraction of Louis Primas orchestra. Club Greyhound was a first-class gambling establishment, offering elegant dining, dancing to name bands, and multiple forms of gambling. Much of the club’s allure was its “sports book” that included horse racing. Western Union Wire Services was used to provide a facsimile of an actual horse race. The results came in over the wire, and the Greyhound had its own announcers who provided the call. Opening in 1932 at the intersection of Lewis and Clark Pkwy. and Eastern Blvd. across from the dog racing track, the club was destroyed by fire in 1934. It reopened in a new building on US-31 at Applegate Lane. The club closed in 1939, but was rented for private parties until about 1951. The building became the Greyhound grocery store in 1953 and was demolished in 1980. |
