David C. Peyton

Description: Portrait of Dr. David C. Peyton, superintendent of the Indiana Reformatory from 1903 to 1918. During Peytons tenure inmates were put to work sandbagging areas in Clarksville, helping to save the town during the 1917 Ohio River flood. He was also superintendent when a fire in 1918 destroyed many of the prisons buildings. Trained as a physician, Peyton also served as the first chair of the Clark County Chapter of the American Red Cross, organized in April 1917.
