Reconstruction of the Ohio River bridge, January 2, 1918

Description: Plate no. 140 from vol. 2 of a photograph album recording the progress of the 1916-1919 reconstruction of the Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge spanning the Ohio River between Louisville, Ky. and Clarksville, Ind. The photograph shows construction on the swing span over the Portland Canal leading to todays McAlpine Locks and Dam. The project replaced the span with a vertical-lift span. The original iron bridge was completed in 1870. The reconstruction project replaced the Fink-truss structure with a stronger double-track steel superstructure placed on the original masonry piers. Bethlehem Steel Bridge Corp. was the project’s contractor; the bridge owner was Louisville Bridge & Terminal Co.
