Reconstruction of the Ohio River bridge, November 16, 1917

Description: Plate no. 130 from vol. 2 of a photograph album recording the progress of the 1916-1919 reconstruction of the Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge spanning the Ohio River between Louisville, Ky. and Clarksville, Ind. The photograph shows one of the clear bridge spans with rock outcroppings at the Falls of the Ohio in the foreground. The clear span and the span to the left illustrate the original Fink-truss structure. The two spans at the far left and right show the new replacement truss structure. The original iron bridge was completed in 1870. The reconstruction project replaced the Fink-truss structure with a stronger double-track steel superstructure placed on the original masonry piers. A vertical-lift span replaced the swing span over the canal leading to the McAlpine Locks. Bethlehem Steel Bridge Corp. was the project’s contractor; the bridge owner was Louisville Bridge & Terminal Co.
