Description: |
Aerial photograph of the Louisville and Portland Canal and locks on the Ohio River at the Falls of the Ohio, taken in October 1930. The canal runs from the right center to the locks, with the ohio running from right to left. Louisville is in the lower right of the photo, Shippingport Island is between the canal and the river, and southern Indiana is along the top. Also visible are the white exposed fossil beds at the Falls of the Ohio and the hydroelectric dam at the left of Shippingport Island. A project in the 1960s enlarged the locks and replaced the old removable sections of dam with a concrete Z-shaped one. The locks and dam were renamed the McAlpine Locks and Dam. |
