Jeannette and Major

Description: Judith Reick Long states that Jeannette was twelve years old when this photograph was taken. It was used by Gene to do a charcoal sketch that appears on page 145 of the Long book, as well as other publications. The Geneva Herald tells us that Jessie Compton from Coldwater, Michigan brought her aunt a Brazilian parrot in July of 1896. This may have been the famous Major. The photographer, F. F. Gregg suffered great loss in the June 1895 fire that destroyed much of Geneva, Indianas business section.(20091089-large) This account can be found in The Lady of the Limberlost pages 113-115.
