River Ridge neighborhood photographs 1960-1963 Charlestown, Indiana

Description:	Nancy Thompson502-297-2354-loaned pictures to be scanned-her father, Walter Clive, worked at INAAP in 1960-1964-they lived in house #38 and then house #35 of the River Ridge houses inside INAAPThis collection of 42 photographs were taken in the River Ridge neighborhood which was located inside the boundries of Indiana Army Ammunition Plant. The houses were built in 1940 or 1941 when the facility was built. The commanding officers and supervisors of the facility lived in the houses. Walter Clive worked at the ammunition plant between 1959-1980. His family lived at River Ridge between 1960-1964 in house #38 for a short time then moved to house #35. These photographs are of his family. They show various houses and land in River Ridge. The area overlooks the Ohio River which can be seen in several of the pictures. A water reseviour was put in near the houses and used as a pool.This area is now part of Charlestown State Park.The United States federal government began acquiring land in Charlestown, Indiana in 1940 to build a smokeless powder ordnance plant to supply the US military during World War II. Indiana Ordnance Works (IOW) Plant 1 and Hoosier Ordnance Plant (HOP) began production in 1941. In 1944, IOW Plant 2 construction began. On 30 Nov 1945 at the end of WWII, Indiana Arsenal became the new name of the facility when the three plants merged. Between 1 Nov 1961 and 1 Aug 1963, the plant was designated Indiana Ordnance Plant. After this time, it became Indiana Army Ammunition Plant (INAAP). Production of ordnance continued at the plant until 1992. After that time, private industry became the tenants. A large portion of the land became Charlestown State Park. In October 2016, the government officially sold all the remaining land and facilities. The library’s collection of INAAP items is kept at Charlestown Library.
