Description: 17 photographs in the Hoosier Ordnance Plant area at Indiana Army Ammunition Plant in Charlestown, Indiana. They show various buildings and rail cars at Load Line 2. At the time these were taken, the area was no longer being used. Photographs taken in July 2008 by Ron Repp, who worked at the facility. The United States federal government began acquiring land in Charlestown, Indiana in 1940 to build a smokeless powder ordnance plant to supply the US military during World War II. Indiana Ordnance Works (IOW) Plant 1 and Hoosier Ordnance Plant (HOP) began production in 1941. In 1944, IOW Plant 2 construction began. On 30 Nov 1945 at the end of WWII, Indiana Arsenal became the new name of the facility when the three plants merged. Between 1 Nov 1961 and 1 Aug 1963, the plant was designated Indiana Ordnance Plant. After this time, it became Indiana Army Ammunition Plant (INAAP). Production of ordnance continued at the plant until 1992. After that time, private industry became the tenants. A large portion of the land became Charlestown State Park. In October 2016, the government officially sold all the remaining land and facilities. The library’s collection of INAAP items is kept at Charlestown Library.hall wayan interior hallway between load booths at load line 2 in HOP areawalk wayload line 2 covered walk way in HOP areaconveyor in walk wayload line 2 covered walk way with conveyor lineinside LL2inside a building of load line 2 in HOP areacanteenload line 2 canteen building outside over grown in HOP areaload line 2 areaload line 2 seen from a distance in HOP areawalk way stairsload line 2 walk way stairs going to canteen building in HOP areaconveyorload line 2 conveyor line area in HOP areawalk wayload line 2 walk way in HOP areawalk wayload line 2 walk way in HOP arearestricted areaShowing the restricted area warning on the outside wall of load line 2 scale shop.U.S. Army restricted area warningThis plant has been declared a restricted area according to a secretary of defese directive issued 20 August 1954 under the provisions of section 21 internal security act of 1950 unauthorized entry is prohibted.
