Ernest Schleicher Civil War Letters

Description: Ernest Schleicher, a soldier in Company I 38th Regiment Indiana Infantry, wrote letters home during the Civil War to Harriet Jackson of New Providence, Indiana. Ernest mustered in as a private in 1861 and was discharged in 1865 as a sergeant. These 19 letters, written by Ernest, not only chronicale events he experienced in the war but also his desire to keep Hattie interested in him so that she would marry him when he got back home. At the close of the Civil War, Ernest returned home and married Hattie in 1866. They raised eight children in Wood Township, Clark County, Indiana during 58 years of marriage.
