Facility One I INAAP ICI-NAAP industrial center resource reserve map c1995, Charlestown, Indiana

Description: This is a map of the resource reserve at Facility One I INAAP in Charlestown, Indiana from 1995. Facility One was the former Indiana Army Ammunition Plant. The United States federal government began acquiring land in Charlestown, Indiana in 1940 to build a smokeless powder ordnance plant to supply the US military during World War II. Indiana Ordnance Works (IOW) Plant 1 and Hoosier Ordnance Plant (HOP) began production in 1941. In 1944, IOW Plant 2 construction began. On 30 Nov 1945 at the end of WWII, the three plants were combined and renamed Indiana Arsenal. Between 1 Nov 1961 and 1 Aug 1963, the plant was designated Indiana Ordnance Plant. After this time, it became Indiana Army Ammunition Plant (INAAP). Production of ordnance continued at the plant until 1992. After that time, the land and facilities were leased to private industry. A large portion of the land became Charlestown State Park. In October 2016, all the land and facilities were officially sold by the government. This item is part of a larger collection of items from INAAP that are kept at Charlestown Library.
CHARLESTOWN STATE PARKThe Charlestown State Park was created in 1993 when the U. S. Army turned over 859 acres of land to the State of Indiana for this important social use. An additional tract of approximately 1250 acres has been leased to the State for park use, to improve access and provide a more economically feasible facility. The Charlestown State Park contains many significant features, including the site of the old Rose Island Amusement Park located at the Ohio River mouth of 14 Mile Creek, and Devils Backbone, a geological upthrust creating a narrow ridge of exposed bedrock. The Welsh Prince Madoc is rumored to have erected a stone fort in this area in pre-Columbian times. When completed, the Charlestown State Park will contain access roads and miles of hiking trials. A natural history interpretive center will provide educational opportunities for young and old, and this newest addition to the Indiana State Park system will provide welcome respite from the rigors of urban life so close at hand.[map]Charlestown State ParkResource ReserveFACILITY ONE I INAAPICI/INAAP INDUSTRIAL CENTER RESOURCE RESERVEMany areas are being set aside as a resource reserve. The natural beauty and abundent wildlife present will be protected from encroachment by development. These reserves also provide a natural buffer between the industrial development and surrounding areas, protecting the borders of the Charlestown State Park and other adjacent uses. This large reserve includes 1165 acres of native woodland, containing Chinquapin, Red, and White Oak, Sugar Maple, Black Walnut, Black Cherry, White Ash, and Hickory. Additionally, there are 625 acres of reforested lands containing many of these species, plus Pine. One stand, consisting of 30 acres of Red Oak planted in 1957, is reported to be the largest reforested stand of this species in Indiana.Important vertebrate species occupying these lands include white-tailed deer, wild turkey, coyote, and ruffed grouse. The rich bio-diversity of these areas will benefit from minimal human contact and be enhanced by wildlife habitat improvements and conservation programs.
